The Philadelphia Flyers took on the Carolina Hurricanes Monday night at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Dan Vladar got the start in net. Owen Tippett remained out with an undisclosed injury, so Carl Grundstrom jumped into the lineup. Garnet Hathaway was a healthy scratch alongside Noah Juulsen, while Emil Andrae was inserted on defense. The Flyers scored two early goals in the first period, but it wasn’t enough. The Hurricanes would ultimately tie the game, send it to overtime, and pull out the victory. The orange and black are down 2-0 in the series.

The Flyers got the game’s first power play at the 3:25 mark of the first period as Sean Walker was called for delay of game (puck over glass). They capitalized courtesy of Jamie Drysdale. Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen poked the puck out of the blue paint, and it found Drysdale in the slot. He then put a wrist shot over Andersen’s blocker. 1-0 Flyers. The goal was unassisted.

39 seconds later, Sean Couturier made the score 2-0 Flyers. Carl Grundstrom, from behind the net, found Couturier in the slot, and he put a snapshot through the legs of Andersen. Grundstrom received the lone assist.

The Hurricanes went on their first power play at the 8:25 mark of the first as Cam York got called for holding. They capitalized thanks to Nikolaj Ehlers. He took an across-ice pass from Jackson Blake and put a slapshot through the left arm of Vladar from the right circle. Blake and K’Andre Miller tallied assists. 2-1 Flyers.

Taylor Hall was called for holding at the 13:21 mark of the first period, which gave the Flyers their second power play. They had a few good chances from in front, but they passed the puck a bit too much. The Hurricanes were able to clear the puck down a few times as well.

Carl Grundstrom got called for holding the stick at the 16:16 mark of the first period. This gave the Hurricanes their second power play. They didn’t record any shots on net, and the Flyers did a great job of breaking up passes, blocking shots, and clearing the puck.

The Hurricanes went on their third power play at the 19:05 mark of the first as the Flyers got caught with too many men on the ice. Trevor Zegras served the penalty. Vladar made a handful of saves, and Luke Glendening had a huge shot block. The Flyers did their job of clearing the puck down the ice as well.

The Flyers got their third power play at the 2:46 mark of the second period as Mark Jankowski was called for delay of game (puck over glass). Denver Barkey had a shot blocked, and Vladar made two saves on Eric Robinson while shorthanded. The Hurricanes penalty kill got very aggressive, which made it difficult for the Flyers.

However, with 17 seconds remaining, Rasmus Ristolainen got called for tripping. This made the game go to four-on-four, and then the Hurricanes would get an abbreviated power play. Vladar had to stand his ground in net and make quite a few saves. A puck sat in the blue paint after squeezing through Vladar’s legs, but Travis Sanheim swiped it away.

The Hurricanes got caught with too many men on the ice at the 9:57 mark of the second. This gave the Flyers their fourth power play. Hall served the penalty. This was the third straight power play with no shots recorded on net. They still were passing too much and the Hurricanes aggressive penalty kill made things difficult.

Barkey was called for high-sticking at the 14:10 mark of the second period, which gave the Hurricanes their fifth power play. Vladar only had to make one save on Miller, and Couturier had a few chances while shorthanded. He also played a little game of keep away to waste time.

The Flyers went on their fifth man advantage at the 17:18 mark of the second as Andrei Svechnikov got called for high-sticking. Andersen made a huge save on Christian Dvorak from in tight, and Jordan Martinook had a chance while shorthanded, but Vladar had the answer. Porter Martone also had a shot blocked by Walker.

Svechnikov was called for high-sticking just 1:35 into the third period. This gave the Flyers their sixth power play. Andersen only had to make one save on Martone, and that’s about it. They struggled with entries, and the Hurricanes penalty kill remained aggressive.

The Hurricanes went on their sixth power play at the 7:40 mark of the third as Emil Andrae got called for roughing. The Flyers did a great job of breaking up passes and clearing the puck. Vladar ended up making a save on Logan Stankoven, and Glendening kept the puck along the boards for a short bit.

Seth Jarvis tied the game up at two for the Hurricanes at the 11:21 mark of the third period. He took a pass from Ehlers and put a snapshot past the glove of Vladar from the right circle. Ehlers and Jordan Staal picked up assists.

The game went to four-on-four at the 14:36 mark of the third as Vladar was called for slashing and Stankoven for goaltender interference. Matvei Michkov served the penalty for Vladar. Both teams had chances in their respective offensive zones, but the goaltenders had all the answers.

No one else scored in regulation, so the game went to overtime.

The Flyers went on their seventh power play at the 6:29 mark of the overtime period as Svechnikov was called for hooking. Andersen made a save on Drysdale, and the Hurricanes had a few huge shot blocks. The Hurricanes were able to clear the puck down multiple times as well.

Hall won the game for the Hurricanes at the 18:54 mark of overtime. Vladar made the initial save on Blake, but the puck stayed around the net. Hall got to the loose puck and put a snapshot into a wide-open net. Assists went to Blake and Walker. 3-2 Hurricanes was the final.

Flyers went one for seven on the power play and killed off five of the six Hurricanes’ man-advantages.

Vladar saved 40 of 43 shots, giving him a .930 save percentage.
