Oliver Bonk has been impressing at the Philadelphia Flyers’ 2026 Rookie Camp.
The 21-year-old defenseman (the Flyers’ 2023 first-round pick, 22nd overall) stood out in the Rookie Series games against the New York Rangers prospects. In the second game (a 4-1 Flyers win on Sunday, September 13), he recorded an assist by setting up longtime junior teammate Denver Barkey on a 2-on-1 for the opening goal. He also played prominently on the power play (bumper) and penalty kill, frequently and effectively joining the rush while showing strong two-way play.
Lehigh Valley Phantoms Head Coach John Snowden (running the camp) highlighted Bonk’s hockey IQ after the game, calling him “very smart” and “surgical on his decisions” when jumping into the play: “He’s good at kind of hiding himself in those situations and just hitting with a burst and jumping into a spot at the right time.” Bonk was dominant at both ends of the ice.
Bonk enters this camp with limited NHL experience from the end of the 2025-26 season (one regular-season game with a goal and assist in his debut, plus one playoff appearance). He’s viewed as a contender for a bottom-pairing NHL spot heading into main Training Camp, though he could also start in the AHL with the Phantoms, largely due to a numbers game.
In short, the early returns from this year’s rookie camp have been strong for him.
