After spending the weekend in Allentown Rookie Camp resumed Monday morning at the Flyers Training Center in Voorhees. Camp opened in Allentown Friday afternoon for a short session at the PPL Center followed by the Flyers vs Rangers Rookie Series games on Saturday and Sunday. The Flyers won both games 3-2 and 4-1. The Flyers young squad should be proud of those two victories, they handled themselves well.
Goaltending
The goalies were the first players to hit the ice at camp this morning. Carson Bjarnason, Martin Psohlavec, and Marek Sklenicka all performed well in Lehigh Valley over the weekend. Bjarnason played all of game one allowing only two goals. Psohlavec and Sklenicka shared the net on Sunday. Sklenicka allowed the only Rangers goal.
Bonk
Oliver Bonk hit the ice this morning with the same type of enthusiasm he played with in Sunday night’s game against the Rangers. He is skating with a high level of confidence, he’s putting pucks in the net, and you can see he is having a good time doing so.
Of course you expected him to be one of the standouts having already logged a couple NHL games and holding his own. So far Bonk has been more than impressive at Rookie Camp. Looking forward to seeing how he holds up with things shift gears later this week.
Powell vs Sokolovskii (video)
Two players who drew a lot of attention over the weekend were Maksim Sokolovskii and Noah Powell. It is interesting to watch the interaction between Sokolovskii #61 and Powell #50 in the video clip above.
Powell has already proven that he’s got a ton of spunk, but Sokolovskii is just so hard to play against. The Flyers 2026 1st round pick is 6′-8″ tall, 240 pounds, and only 18 years old. He has to be considered precious cargo during his development, he’s got “it”. He was sold as a shut-down defenseman but he’s got great hands, a ridiculous reach, and his long strides just eat up the ice. If all goes right he’s gonna be something else.
Denver Barkey and Jett Luchanko did not participate in the on ice session today. Both played well in Sunday night’s game neither sustained injury. Their absence today was considered “maintenance” and both are expected to join the team on the ice on Tuesday.
Luchanko centered the Flyers top line in both games over the weekend. Barkey wore the captains “C” on Sunday and scored the 1st goal of the game. Flyers Training Camp opens this Thursday and players like Barkey and Luchanko will certainly be taking part. There’s really no reason to run them down before main camp gets underway.
Flyers Rookie Camp resumes 11:15 AM Tuesday September 15th at the Training Center in Voorhees. All session are free and open to the public.
