The timing on that comment, in reference to Matvei Michkov, is perfect, “Different Swagger”. Flyers’ General Manager Danny Brière literally said today that Michkov “Walks around with a different swagger than he did two years ago.” Briere spoke to Flyers reporters in Voorhees, in his annual Training Camp Presser.
Full Quote: “It showed he took of himself (After olympic break), and I think he took that mentality into the offseason. He walks around with a different swagger, than he did two years ago.”
Briere continued, “He’s very competitive, that’s his nature. I wouldn’t be surprised that he wants to prove that last year was a hiccup, and bounces back. That’s what I expect from him.”
After the conditioning drama last camp, the mid-season heat from Flyers’ Head Coach Rick Tocchet, the usage rollercoaster, and getting scratched in the playoffs, it looks like the kid took the message. He’s down nearly 30 pounds (176 lbs, 10.6% body fat), showed up looking lean and sharp, and teammates are openly saying they expect an “F-U” edge from him this year.
Briere also reiterated that Michkov looks good, and has matured this offseason.
Rookie-year Michkov had that cocky, “I’m better than this” energy. Sophomore year it got a little muted. If the version that’s about to walk into camp is closer to Year 1 with better legs and a chip on his shoulder, Flyers fans are going to be very happy. Camp opens in a couple days — should be fun to watch.
