Dylan Larkin’s trade request from Detroit just shook things up for the Flyers to obtain a 1C. The Flyers suddenly have options to obtain a potential 1C this offseason.

The Flyers have long had a clear need at center. Despite strong wing talent (Matvei Michkov, Travis Konecny, Tyson Foerster, OwenTippett, and incoming pieces like Porter Martone), they’ve been relying on a mix of Christian Dvorak (solid middle-six guy with a long extension), Trevor Zegras (more dynamic but better suited as a 2C/winger), Noah Cates, and an aging Sean Couturier. No true top-line, two-way 1C has been locking it down.

Larkin (turning 30 on July 30th) requesting a trade changes the picture fast. He’s a proven scorer (multiple 30+ goal seasons), strong two-way player, former Olympian/gold medalist, and Captain with leadership upside. Many see him as a legitimate 1C who could slot right in with Philly’s young wings and play under Rick Tocchet.

Other options on the table

The Flyers have been linked to several centers in recent months:

  • Robert Thomas (St. Louis Blues) — Often mentioned as a strong two-way fit.
  • Matty Beniers, Shane Wright, or others via trade.
  • Elias Pettersson (Canucks) or Mason McTavish (Ducks) as higher-upside but riskier plays.
  • Internal hopes on prospects like Jett Luchanko, plus free agency or offer sheets (though top RFA’s like Adam Fantilli/Leo Carlsson are tough).

Larkin stands out as one of the more “ready now” Veteran options that suddenly became available.

Trade realities

It won’t be cheap. Detroit will want a strong return (prospects, picks, maybe a young NHL player). Flyers have assets but would likely need to avoid giving up Michkov/Martone core pieces. Cap-wise it’s doable, though his deal runs through 2030-31. Some fans worry about age, the asking price, or fit, while others see it as a dream target to push the team toward contention.

Flyers’ General Manager Danny Briere and company have been patient and smart with cap/assets so far. This feels like one they’ll at least kick the tires on hard. Suddenly having a guy like Larkin as a realistic target is a nice development for a team that’s been hunting for that centerpiece down the middle. What do you think—go all in on Larkin, target someone else, or wait for the kids to develop?
