Charlotte, NC – Fought back and fell short. The Checkers and Phantoms on consecutive nights would need more than regulation, Charlotte getting the upper hand this time. The night prior Tanner Laczynski called the game with a wrister just 58 seconds into the session. A different story tonight both teams had the chances in overtime but were denied and needed a shootout. A big night for Samoskevich who netted two goals and a tally in the shootout, he would earn first star honors and deservingly so.

RECAP

Things got going quickly for the Checkers dawning their black jerseys. Zac Dalpe just nine seconds into the contest, found twine for his 5th of the season beating Gahagen who was out of position after a careless pass. Nearing the halfway mark of the frame, Brendan Perlini netted his 6th of the year batting the rebound out of mid-air to put Charlotte up by two. Late in the frame, Olle Lycksell cut the lead in half with his redirection on Belpedio’s shot, 13th of the season at the 18:21 mark.

Tanner Laczynski’s odd bounce on his wrist shot, knotted things up with an early second-period power-play tally just 1:33 in. Mackie Samoskevich put Charlotte back on top with his first of two on the night, another goal that seemed to have Gahagen lost at 4:54.

Mackie Samoskevich’s second tally came just over two minutes into the third period, a power play blocker-side snipe at 2:20. Wade Allison exactly 1:20 later brought the Phantoms back within one, a breakaway goal at 3:40. 34 seconds later, Cooper Marody tied the score up with his 7th of the season. Marody’s shot hit the post and then bounced off the back of the netminder Waeber at 4:14

Just like the night prior the Phantoms and Checkers would need more than 60 minutes of play. Both teams in the overtime would have 6 shots but no goaltender prevailing would lead us to a shootout.

Jon-Randall (JR) Avon opened the shootout for Lehigh Valley, but he was denied on his opening shot wrister. On the other end, Samoskevich kicked things off for Charlotte his nifty backhander gave Charlotte the upper hand through round one. Wade Allison even things up in the second round, sliding the puck past the sprawled-out goaltender. Zac Dalpe would be denied in the bottom half of the second round for Charlotte. Olle Lycksell was frustrated after his attempt in the third round, a wrist shot right into the glove of Waeber. Brendan Perlini called game, took his time, and wristed a shot over the right shoulder of Gahagen to win it for Charlotte.
