Jack Hextall (the 18-year-old USHL center out of Youngstown Phantoms, Michigan State commit) lines up almost perfectly with what the Flyers have been prioritizing in recent drafts: smart, high-motor, 200-foot centers who can skate, compete, and think the game at a high level.

Why he fits Philly so well:

  • Profile matches Flyers DNA: High hockey IQ, relentless compete, two-way play, protects the puck well, and plays a mature 200-foot game already. He’s not a flashy highlight-reel guy but the kind of reliable, detailed forward the organization loves.
  • Size & tools: 6’1, 188 lbs, right-shot center with good skating and strength that’s improved. Projects as a potential middle-six guy with upside.
  • Hextall connection: Distant cousin of Ron Hextall. It’s a fun narrative for fans, though Jack has said they’ve never actually met.

Hextall is generally ranked in the late first to early second round range for the 2026 draft, so he’s plausible at their spot without reaching too hard.

Like many USHL-to-NCAA prospects, he’ll need time to develop physically and adapt to faster pro paces. He’s more “safe, high-floor” than “boom-or-bust superstar,” but that’s often exactly what builds sustained contention.

If the Flyers are hunting another Center with character and smarts to complement their current group, Hextall checks basically every box.
