The Flyers have a rich history with successful undrafted free agents. For instance, Tim Kerr, look how successful he was with the orange and black. Another one that some people may forget is Sergei Bobrovsky. He was signed to a three-year entry-level contract in 2010 with the Flyers from the KHL. Well, let’s not forgot about another in Philippe Myers.

Myers was born January 25, 1997 in Moncton, NB, CAN. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Flyers on September 21, 2015. It was a three-year, Entry-Level contract worth $1.908 million. Since his latest recall, Myers really has shown a calming presence, poise, and well he is so darn fast. Myers seems to outskate his opponents with ease. Back in 2015, Myers told me in an interview that he improved his skating, “My skating. I have become a faster skater. I have become more sound offensively, as well as, defensively. Just my overall game is better I believe. I’m hoping to create something for the future, that the Flyers and fans will enjoy.” Well, Myers is just so darn explosive today, so he made good on this conversation.

This young defenseman in Myers is a really good skater, and it really is giving him confidence offensively. Last night, against the Boston Bruins, he became the seventh Flyers defenseman in history to score goals in 3 consecutive games. Myers was the first one to do this since Mark Howe did it in 1986, as Myers joined the ranks into some pretty elite company.

The former Rouyn-Noranda Huskie, Myers was being groomed into a future shutdown defenseman with his stints in the AHL. The Flyers top brass has always remained patient with him, but still have had high hopes for this young man (To include Ron Hextall). Eventually, the Flyers top brass wanted people to think of Ivan Provorov, Travis Sanheim, and Philippe Myers, in regards to the blue line in the future.

Fortunately, Myers has excelled in his latest recall with the orange and black. Myers played just ok with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms this season, before his recall to the big club. In six games played for the Phantoms, Myers registered four assists. Myers then comes to the Flyers, and tallies 3 goals…go figure right. His latest was a snipe over the shoulder of Jaroslav Halak of the Bruins last night. It’s not just the goal scoring, Myers is one heck of a defenseman. Myers appears to be in the right spots to negate passes, his gap control of staying with his opponent is good, and he never appears to be out of the play. In addition, Myers can board battle with the best of them. Simply put, Myers has been unbelievable.

For the season, Myers has a 45.8 CF%, has registered 8 hits, 7 blocks, and takeaways. Not bad numbers by any means in his latest recall. Myers just appears to be faster, and more determined. His last stint with the Phantoms went well, and Myers is more confident in his abilities this go around. Myers is letting the game come to him, as opposed to him chasing the game. Right now Myers exudes so much confidence, that he is fueling the Flyers winning streak. All in all, Myers is turning into the player the Flyers thought he would eventually become, when he was signed in 2015.

  1. Way to go Phil, I am very happy for you.Hard work is paying off .A friend of your mother.xoxo

    1. Thank you so much for the read. It’s a pleasure getting to know this young man.

  2. Here’s something that Flyer fans and even the Flyer coaches don’t know about Phillippe Myers. He is outstanding in shootouts. I wish the coaches would watch him go one on one with the Flyer’s goalies in practice just to see what I’m talking about. I was at a development camp practice two years ago and after the regular practice was over and fans and players left the Skate Zone, Myers came back out onto the ice with a very good Flyers goalie to work On shoot outs. Myers put ten straight shotS pst that goaltender, using a variety of moves. I wish I had recorded the whole thing. David Kase was also involved in the shoot out that day and had nowhere near the success Myer’s had.

    1. Gregg,

Thanks for the read and support. This young man is so talented. Fortunately, this is just the beginning for him. He will continue to improve, and it would be cool seeing him in a shootout. Thanks
