Owen Tippett underwent sports hernia surgery about two weeks ago (as of early June 2026), after playing through it during the first-round series vs. Pittsburgh and dealing with internal bleeding that sidelined him for the Carolina series. He (and the team) has expressed confidence he’ll be ready for Training Camp in September, and the internal bleeding has healed.

Why recovery might not mean “100% himself” right away:

  • Typical sports hernia surgery recovery for athletes is 6-12 weeks for a full return to sport, but that can vary. Many players are physically cleared but take longer to regain explosive power, cutting, shooting, and full confidence in core movements that hockey demands.
  • Flyers history with these injuries isn’t great. Players like Claude Giroux, Shayne Gostisbehere, Kevin Hayes, Nolan Patrick, Brian Elliott, and Jamie Drysdale have needed several months (sometimes into December/January) to truly feel like themselves after core/hip/hernia procedures. The organization has seen repeated cases where guys were “Healthy” for camp but ramped up slowly or had lingering effects early in the season.

Tippett is coming off a strong season (51 points), so there’s upside if he can get back on track. But, being cleared for camp doesn’t always equal peak performance from Day 1, as Tippett will not be able to train like he normally would this offseason. Many expect him to ease in and potentially hit his stride later in the year.

Hockey fans (especially Flyers ones) have learned to be cautious with these core injuries. We’ll see how his rehab goes over the Summer.
