So why did the Flyers sign Bunting?
Unfortunately, the Flyers have been outscored 17-5 through four games, managed just five goals total (with forwards combining for only three), averaged a league-worst ~19.3 shots per game, and were heavily outshot (e.g., 158-77 in some reports). Speaking of AHL, with Alex Bump struggling through the first four games of the season, maybe he gets sent to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms to find his game. Bump has been recently relegated to the fourth line, and I have a feeling the Flyers view him as a top nine player in the future.
Bunting, 31, is a gritty Left Winger known for net-front presence, dirty goals, agitation, and physical play (career 342 PIM and hundreds of hits). He has history with Tocchet from his early NHL days with the Arizona Coyotes (parts of 2018–21). Last season he posted 33 points (14 goals) in 74 games split between Nashville and Dallas. Career totals stand at 109 goals and 252 points in 418 games, with a high of 63 points as a Calder finalist in his first full season with Toronto (2021–22). He fits as a bottom-six or middle-six depth option who can contribute on the power play and as a “glue guy”/agitator.
It is a low-commitment, prorated deal after Bunting went unsigned following a prior three-year, $4.5M AAV contract. Analysts describe it as a floor-raising, desperation-tinged depth move rather than a major upgrade—addressing immediate competitiveness issues while the team evaluates internal options—but not a complete fix for deeper offensive problems
