E187 – Flyers Need To Stick To Their Process On West Coast Trip

The Philadelphia Flyers, like the past handful of seasons, have had an up and down ride starting their season. Even though they saw some great success to start the season, they’ve hit roadblocks along the way. While, most of this is expected, and seems like history repeating, it’s important to remember, that history does not actually repeat itself, it only rhymes. The Flyers are going on their annual West Coast trip that sees them taking on the San Jose Sharks to start, who are having one of the worst starts in NHL history. They are currently without a win going 0-9-1 to start the season and losing their last two games 10-1 and 10-2. Last season the Flyers went into San Jose when the team was unable to win a game, but found themselves down early with a 3-0 deficit that lead to both Travis Konecny and Kevin Hayes, benched for the entirety of the third period. This was a transformational moment for the team as Hayes did not find any value in the benching, while Konecny took the motivation to have the best season of his career. Cam Yorks’ recent 3rd period benching against the loss to the kings, could bring on some extra motivation for the team to use.

The Flyers will walk into the Sharks game losing their last game to the Kings 5-0 and playing their worst game of the early season. However, that effort was exacerbated by injuries to key players, Sean Couturier and Carter Hart, and coming off a 5-1 win the night before against the Buffalo Sabers. This year facing the Sharks, the Flyers are coming off a two day break and potentially getting both of their top players back for the road trip, giving them an extra spark. The Flyers have shown to be a very resilient team this season, that has not come out with poor performances in back-to-back games so far. Will they be able to continue that trend as they take on a team in full desperation mode?

On this episode of Gettin’ Gritty Wit It, Yariv and Vasili go through the Flyers rollercoaster of an early season that has them one game below .500 and vicious loss to the Los Angeles kings. We go through the team’s identity, the need to get the power play going early, the return of some of their elite talent, and also an update on their key prospects in Cutter Gauthier and Matvei Michkov. This is not one to miss.
