The Flyers had a very embarrassing home opener. They opened the 2026-27 season on Wednesday, September 30, at Xfinity Mobile Arena against their rivals, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and got shut out 7-0.
It was a total mismatch: the Penguins outshot them 38-19, scored early and often (including a couple of power-play goals), and goalie Arturs Silovs blanked the Flyers completely. Dan Vladar stayed in net for Philly the whole way and faced the full beating. Fans who started the night excited ended up booing the team off the ice.
Flyers’ Head Coach Rick Tocchet and several players (Travis Sanheim, Sean Couturier, Travis Konecny) called it ugly, said they didn’t win battles, and admitted Pittsburgh outplayed and outcoached them. It tied the worst season-opening loss in franchise history.
The Flyers are right back at it tonight (October 1) on the road against the New Jersey Devils. One game doesn’t make a season, but this was about as rough a start as it gets.
