The Flyers (0-1-1) host the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes (0-1-1) tonight at 7:00 p.m. ET at Xfinity Mobile Arena in a Metropolitan Division matchup where both teams are seeking their first win of the 2026-27 season.

Of course, the Flyers opened with tying a franchise-record 7-0 home loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday (Dan Vladar allowed all seven goals on 38 shots), then showed improvement in a 3-2 overtime loss at New Jersey on Thursday. Joseph Woll made 41 saves in that game, while defensemen Rasmus Ristolainen and Travis Sanheim provided the offense (Sanheim had a goal and an assist). Flyers’ Head Coach Rick Tocchet noted the team was still “out of sync” with the puck and planned practice adjustments.

Carolina, the reigning champs, started with a 1-0 overtime loss to Florida (goal with 4.3 seconds left) and followed with a 5-2 home loss to Washington on Friday, in which they were described as “outplayed and outmatched.” Sebastian Aho and Logan Stankoven scored; Brandon Bussi allowed five goals on 27 shots. Coach Rod Brind’Amour and players (including Jordan Staal and Stankoven) called for better effort and intensity, noting the target on their backs as champions. Pyotr Kochetkov is expected to start in goal after Bussi’s consecutive starts. Jordan Martinook is set for his 800th NHL game.

Key Context

  • Last season, Carolina swept the Flyers in the Eastern Conference semifinals (outscoring them 13-5) and took three of four regular-season meetings (all decided beyond regulation).
  • Both teams sit tied for sixth in the Metro with one point each.
  • Hurricanes injury note: Seth Jarvis is practicing in a non-contact jersey after shoulder surgery.
  • Flyers injuries reported in some previews: Nikita Grebenkin (out, undisclosed) and Denver Barkey (out, lower-body).
  • Betting lines have generally favored Carolina (around -128 to -134 moneyline) with a total near 5.5–6.0.

The Flyers have the rest advantage (Carolina is on a back-to-back) and home ice after a more competitive second outing. Carolina will look to snap its early skid and reassert the structure that carried it to the Cup, while Philadelphia aims to build on Thursday’s better defensive effort and avoid an 0-3-1 start.
