The Flyers are actively looking to add a top-line/Number One Center this offseason.

This has been a long-standing organizational need (dating back years since the Brayden Schenn era), and their strong 2025-26 season—making the playoffs and reaching the second round—has only highlighted it further.
General Manager Danny Briere has acknowledged it publicly at exit interviews, noting the position remains a priority even after internal improvements. They lack a true number one Center.
Current Center Situation
- Sean Couturier (33): Solid veteran two-way play, especially late season/playoffs; more of a 2C/3C now.
- Trevor Zegras: Shifted to center at times and performed well (dynamic playmaker, ~67 points); RFA this summer—re-signing him is a priority, but many see his ideal long-term home on the wing. thehockeywriters.com
- Christian Dvorak: Reliable middle-six option with a new extension; career year but not a top-line guy.
- Noah Cates: Strong defensive 3C with improved offense.
- Prospects like Denver Barkey, Jett Luchanko, etc., provide some future depth but aren’t ready to anchor the top line.
The playoff run showed the group could compete but was exposed against stronger competition without a dominant Center who can drive play, win key faceoffs, and elevate wingers like Matvei Michkov, Travis Konecny, and others.

Offseason Outlook
- Cap space: Flyers project $38–40M+ in flexibility for 2026-27 (after re-signings), giving them room to pursue impact additions.
- Approach: Briere prefers building internally where possible but has confirmed they’ll explore upgrades at center (via trade or otherwise). Free agency is unlikely to solve it outright due to a thin class for elite centers.
- Draft: They’ll pick 21st overall and have multiple selections, but this isn’t a draft loaded with surefire number one Centers who can help immediately.
Potential Targets and Rumors
The trade market is the most discussed path. Names frequently linked include:
- Robert Thomas (St. Louis Blues): The top rumored target—young (26), two-way, consistent 80-point potential, team-friendly contract. Flyers have checked in, but the asking price (prospects + picks, possibly including Michkov/Tippett-level pieces) is very high. The Blues are retooling, so he won’t come cheaply.
- Others: Mason McTavish (Anaheim), or even bigger swings like Nico Hischier, though realistic availability varie, possibly Austin Matthews.
Briere has the assets (Wing depth, picks, prospect pool) to make a deal if the right player becomes available, but he won’t overpay recklessly. The Flyers are in a “win-now window” acceleration phase after their playoff success. Adding a true Number One Center would pair nicely with their young core (Matvei Michkov, Porter Martone, Trevor Zegras, Jamie Drysdale, etc.) and strong Goaltending (Dan Vladar). Expect updates as RFA’s are sorted and the draft/trade market heats up in June/July.
