It’s been a little over a year since the Philadelphia Flyers parted ways with head coach John Tortorella. Tortorella signed on with the Flyers in June of 2022 to steer the team through an extended rebuilding phase. He saw the team through challenging times as they moved veteran players, created cap space, and stockpiled draft-picks during a period of necessary austerity.

Parting Ways

An “altercation” which followed a 7-2 route by the Toronto Maple Leafs on March 25th 2025 proved to be the last straw. Tortorella was fired with only 9 games remaining on the schedule and a year left on his contract. Flyers General Manager Danny Briere said the firing came about due to “an accumulation of things” and not a specific event.

Tortorella drew a lot of attention that night in Toronto during his post game presser when he said, “I’m not really interested in learning how to coach in this type of season where we’re at right now”. In the end the Flyers management wrapped things up by saying, “We felt at this time, it was time to move in a different direction”.

A Different Direction

When Tortorella was the Flyers boss bench he said that this would be his last coaching job. Perhaps his tenure in Philadelphia getting cut short changed his plans and took him in a different direction.

Tortorella won a goal medal in the 2026 Milan Winter Olympics as an assistant coach with the USA men’s ice hockey team. This was not a full time NHL head coaching job but it did keep him in the game.

A Golden Opportunity

In a surprise move John Tortorella accepted the job as the head coach of the Vegas Golden Knights one year and four days after being released by the Flyers.

In a very similar situation the Knights fired head coach Bruce Cassidy with only 8 games remaining on their regular season schedule. Vegas finished out their season 7-0-1 with Tortorella at the helm.

The Post Season

Vegas eliminated the Utah Mammoth in the first round in six games. The Knights went on to defeat the Anaheim Ducks also in six games in the second round.

The Conference Final had Vegas facing the Presidents’ Trophy winning Colorado Avalanche. Colorado was by far the best team in the NHL stringing together a staggering 121 points during the regular season.

By contrast the Vegas Golden Knights topped the Pacific Division with only 95 points, finishing 26 points behind the Avalanche in the West. The Knights shocked the hockey world by sweeping the mighty Avalanche in four games earning the Clarence Campbell Bowl and a trip to the Stanley Cup Final. Tortorella’s record since joining the Knights is now 19-4-1.

Fined by the NHL

No stranger to controversy Tortorella made headlines at the completion of the 2nd Round series against the Ducks when he did not take part in the handshake line nor speak with the press after winning the deciding game in Annaheim. He left the ice after a brief conversation with the Ducks coaching staff.

At first it was said to be a scheduling decision but many now say the move may have been a protest inspired by a suspension handed out to Vegas’ Braden McNabb after a late hit on former Flyer Ryan Poehling in Game 5.

Either way Tortorellas absence was determined to be a “flagrant violation” and he was fined $100,000 dollars and Vegas was stripped of their 2026 2nd round draft pick. A steep price to pay.

Poehling did not appear in Game 6 due to injury. Another Philly connection, former Flyer goaltender Carter Hart has been in the Vegas net for all 16 of their post season games.

Contribution to the Flyers

Things may not have worked out long term for John Tortorella here in Philadelphia but he deserves credit for helping to turn things around here when the organization totally lacked direction and inspiration.

Tortorella joined the Flyers during the waning days of the Chuck Fletcher era. Everything seemed lost and no one seemed to have a plan or the energy to do anything about it. Tortorella saw a once great hockey organization in desperate need of a total makeover.

He saw a history worth embracing, and a fanbase who had long been ignored. He did a lot to change not just the structure but the culture of the organization and get it headed in a better direction.

The Stanley Cup

The Vegas Golden Knight will be facing either the Montreal Canadians or the Carolina Hurricanes in the Stanley Cup Final Series depending on the outcome of the Conference Final in the East. Tortorella has not made an appearance in the Final since he won the Cup in 2004 as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Best of luck Torts, what a year.
