During the 2025-26 season (including playoffs), Sean Couturier embraced a redefined, more defensive/shutdown role with increased physicality, reducing some offensive responsibilities to better help the team. Flyers’ General Manager Danny Briere publicly praised him for it.

Briere specifically said something along the lines of:
“He accepted the new role, seeing that it was really helping the team and he could be a force in that role… Really impressive for him to accept that role, take responsibilities off him on offense, but really become a force with shutting down opponents, physicality wise.” – Flyers General Manager Danny Briere said at exit interviews

This came up in the context of the Flyers’ playoff run (they advanced in the first round) and end-of-season reflections. Couturier has shown strong leadership and adaptability, which Briere highlighted. This is also why he is Captain of the team.
Couturier not only embraced his new role, but excelled at it, even so-much-so the team rallied behind him. he became that dominant player from 2011-12 again, while stifling his opponents. Couturier was arguably one of the best Forwards for the Flyers in the Playoffs.
It’s a positive development for a veteran leader who’s been with the organization a long time (and has that personal history with Briere from back in the day).
