Hunter McDonald has been playing well for the Flyers in limited NHL action this season after a strong start in the AHL.

The 24-year-old, 6’4, 238-pound left-shot defenseman (2022 sixth-round pick, No. 165) was recalled from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on October 18 amid injuries (Cam York placed on IR). He had been solid with the Phantoms early in 2026-27 (1 goal, 2 assists, 3 points, +4 in 6 games), including a shorthanded goal.
This season he’s appeared in a handful of games as depth on the blue line (third-pair minutes, often around 10–13 minutes). He’s not putting up points (0 in his early 2026-27 games after an assist in his one-game debut last April), but he’s making an impact with physical, no-nonsense play that coach Rick Tocchet has praised. Tocchet noted he “has been playing well down there” in the AHL and likes the willingness to hit hard and force opponents into undisciplined responses.

Standout moments include steady hockey in his season debut (partnered with David Jiricek) and especially a big, clean hit on Anaheim’s Sam Colangelo on October 24 that drew retaliatory penalties (including from A.J. Greer, who dropped the gloves). That created a 5-on-3 the Flyers converted twice on. He’s also fought and racked up hits/blocks in limited ice time.
McDonald’s stay-at-home, physical “throwback” type rather than an offensive producer, and the early returns show the Flyers value that edge while their defense deals with injuries. He’s under a two-year deal (two-way/one-way structure, ~$912.5k AAV) signed in August.
