When Carter Hart was sidelined from a season ending injury. The Philadelphia Flyers were forced to bring up Lehigh Valley Phantoms Goalie Alex Lyon from the Taxi Squad to serve as the number two guy behind veteran Brian Elliott. With Brian Elliott potentially leaving the team next year, this will open up a spot for a goalie to come in and fill the void behind Carter Hart. Alex Lyon has been the one called upon this year and has highly impressed in his last two starts in the big leagues. Tl

He was 40 seconds away from a shutout last night against the “Ovechkin-less” Washington Capitals. Lyon was very strong through 60 minutes of play, as he made 38 saves out of 40 shots faced. The game would eventually go to overtime, where the Flyers lost 2-1.

Lyon has jumped into the mix for the spot behind Carter Hart next season, pending if Elliott does not re-sign. Has he proved himself? Has he played well enough to earn the spot?

This season with the Flyers he has registered a 1-3-1 record in six games played with a GAA of 3.33, and a Save Percentage of .893 (Which is the highest on the team). These numbers are not the best, but keep in mind this is behind a pitiful Flyers defense. In the last few starts, Alex has played extremely well, and was quite impressive. Now, when the season comes to and end, who will be the number two guy? Will it be Alex Lyon? Someone from Free agency? It will all be answered in the off-season, but to not consider him would be surprising. Only time will tell.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it

  1. I think we’ve seen enough of Lyon to know he’s not quite good enough for a backup job. A great number 3 option though. Coming off Hart’s awful year, the Flyers need a backup you can really trust. Someone you can ride for a bit if Carter gets in a funk.

  2. Lyon spent more time on the taxi squad over the past year, going back forth between Lehigh Valley and the Fliers, than he did between the pipes. Just looked it up, 20-21 season, 4 games for LHV and 5 for the Flyers, then suddenly, after not seeing a game in weeks, he gets thrown in the big show facing the Caps or Crosby. He did pretty well.
