It was announced today that the Flyers lost right-hand defenseman, Mark Friedman, to the Pittsburgh Penguins through a waiver claim.

In July, the Flyers signed Friedman to a two-year, $1.45 million contract.

Yesterday, Chuck Fletcher put Friedman out on waivers so he would be assigned back to the taxi squad. He made it through half a day, all the way up until he hit the ice with the Flyers this morning, but there wasn’t enough time.

Penguins current GM, Rox Hextall, was the Flyers manager from 2014-2018. Hextall drafted Friedman in the third-round of the 2014 NHL Draft. Throughout his time with the Flyers, he always would comment on how much he enjoyed watching Friedman play and grow as a defenseman.

The Flyers lose a very important depth piece on the backend. Not too often you find skilled right-hand defender in the NHL. Even though he only played 11 games with the Flyers, he still had much more to prove.
