The Carolina Hurricanes enjoyed a decisive victory in Game 1 of this Stanley Cup Playoff series against the Philadelphia Flyers this past Saturday. The late scheduling of an early match-up had the Flyers a bit off balance and scrambling before the puck was even dropped.

Wednesday night the Flyers eliminated the Penguins. Thursday night the date for Game 1 was announced. Friday after a truncated practice session the team headed to Carolina. Saturday night they were shutout in the first game of the 2nd Round 3-0.

Shortly before puck drop it was announced Game 2 will be on Monday night. The Hurricanes had been resting at home all week after sweeping the Ottawa Senators. The Hurricanes came storming out of the gate in the opening contest. The Flyers were on a reconnaissance mission, the Canes were set on search and destroy.

Game 1

The Hurricanes scored two early goals in the 1st period and the Flyers were chasing the game from that point on. Carolina has a solid squad that is sharp with the puck and fast on their skates. They play very aggressively in every zone. They come right at the puck carrier, forecheck, backcheck, neutral zone it makes no difference. They gave the Flyers zero time and space to work with.

The Flyers were looking to match the Hurricanes speed but they looked rushed instead of fast. Carolina pressured the Flyers into playing hot potato with the puck, flinging it without purpose, and not making wise decisions. They were dumping incessantly just to relieve the pressure. This resulted in frequent icings and turnovers. This was surly not the start Philly was looking for.

Fundamental Hockey

When the Flyers come off the rails of their system the results are never good. This is why Coach Tocchet is so adamant about his team staying on script. Every man has to buy in, trust their teammates, and stay the course. When they Flyers scramble they crumble. It’s true Carolina is a very good team with excellent coaching and the best record in the East. But lesser teams have also driven this point home as well. The Flyers need to play their own game and not go off randomly chasing the opposition’s strategy.

Banking on the Bounce

Aside from their disastrous January the Flyers have been an excellent bounce back team this season. They rarely didn’t pick up at least one point in games that followed a loss. The Philadelphia hockey club was also a fantastic road team going 23-14-4. This is not uncharted territory and it’s too early to panic when focus is what they actually need.

You’re hearing flack from folks already in doom mode after Saturday’s loss. “They should have never made it this far” or worse, “they don’t deserve to be here”. Many are under the false impression that the Flyers were lucky down the stretch and don’t stand a chance against the mighty Carolina Hurricanes.

Popular Misconception

The Flyers were not the Cinderella team that many still seem to believe they are. Either folks aren’t aware or have just plain forgotten the Flyers had a very strong start to their 2025-26 season. That’s the only reason they were able to reclaim enough ground going down the stretch to land in 3rd place.

The Flyers were in the hunt for the top spot in the Metropolitan Division over the holidays. They were just two points behind the Canes at Christmas. Many who are not familiar with how all of this came together are not giving the Flyers nearly enough credit.

Without a strong October, November, December the Flyers wouldn’t have had time to climb into a playoff spot down the stretch no matter how great they were playing.

Game 2

The Hurricanes were clearly the superior team in Game 1 but it’s way too early for the upstart, rebuilding Flyers to lay down. They don’t need to win Game 2 but they absolutely need to put up a much better fight. If Monday night’s game is a carbon copy of Saturday then maybe you can start to get a little concerned.
