Flyers Hurricanes play in Philadelphia

Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Tortorella was not too interested in rehashing the particulars after this hockey game where his team lost 4-1 against the visiting Carolina Hurricanes. Tortorella was asked about his team getting bounces to which he responded. “I think you have to earn your own bounces”.

He continued, “I thought it was just an ugly hockey game, probably by both teams. I guess I’ll speak on my team, we were just flat”.

Flyers vs Canes

The Flyers coach summed it up pretty well. It was an unfortunate looking game. And there really is not much you can do to pretty it up. It’s not like the Flyers were dominated or anything like that. In fact halfway through the game the score was tied, the shots on goal were tied, however you could see the Flyers did not have the drive to win it. It was only a matter of time.

The Flyers and Canes were both getting their share of chances but Carolina’s chances were of a different caliber. The Flyers were whacking away at pucks up close that just refused to go in. On the other hand the Hurricanes were getting odd man rushes and keeping Carter Hart moving side to side just to keep them off the board.

Blue line blues

The blue line was a problem for the Flyers at both ends of the ice. They were having trouble clearing their own zone and Carolina was keeping them from cleanly entering the offensive zone. Carolina’s first goal was a good example. The Flyers could not get a clear out of their own end and allowed the Canes to move the puck around until Carter Hart was out of tricks. With Hart out of position Michael Bunting was all alone in front of an open net for the slam dunk.

The Flyers only goal of the night actually was a thing of beauty. Tyson Foerster with the perfect stretch pass straight up the middle to send Travis Konecny on a breakaway from the blue line. Konecny put the puck past the glove of Pyotr Kochetkov for his 12th goal of the season. TK looked super happy to have scored it. The game was tied at one and for a few moments there the future seemed bright. It wasn’t.

Former Flyer Brendan Lemieux scored an unassisted goal in another situation where the Flyers just couldn’t clear their zone. Scott Laughton tried to clear the puck away from the front of the Flyers net. The attempt went right off of Lemieux’s shin pad and Lemieux smacked it home.

Heartbreaker

The Flyers were only down by one in the third period so things could’ve still gone either way at that point. Seth Jarvis stormed into the Flyers zone and ripped a wrist shot from the circle. Hart looked to have it. The puck went off his right pad but as he was sliding back towards the net the puck went in off of the back of his skate. It was that type of night for the Flyers. If there had been any hope for a comeback it ended right there.

Flat

Caroline scored the final goal of the night into the empty net making it 4-1. Jesperi Kotkaniemi chipped the puck in from the sideboards at the hash marks. When the puck went into the net there was no reaction from the remaining fans. There was no reaction from the Flyers. There was no celebration from the Canes. Flat, …flat flat flat.

Extra Credit: The Flyers signed 9 year old power forward Owen Micciche to a one day contract. Owen spent some time on the bench right next to John Tortorella during the game. Coach couldn’t say enough nice things about Owen and his family. Tonight was Hockey Fights Cancer Night.
