With the Flyers dealing with a bombshell with Matt Niskanen retiring. Flyers’ General Manager Chuck Fletcher wasted no time ensuring up the back end with Niskanen’s departure. The Flyers have announced that they have re-signed Right-Handed Defenseman Justin Braun to a new two-year $3.6 million deal, worth $1.8 million per year.

Braun took a hometown discount to stay with the team he enjoyed playing for. With my time being around the Flyers locker room last year he was happy, smiling, even joking with various players. Braun wasn’t the flashiest Defenseman, but he was a serviceable one.

He played well with Robert Hagg, and really this pairing became a staple as a solid bottom pairing unit. For the 2019-20 season, Braun registered three goals, 16 assists, 84 blocks, and 91 hits. Braun was an integral player on the Penalty Kill, as Mike Yeo trusted him in every situation defensively.

With Braun re-signed, now the question shifts to who will be paired with Ivan Provorov. Personally, one internal option is Philippe Myers. Myers is more than ready to play some minutes, or Travis Sanheim is another viable option. One thing is certain the Braun re-signing makes sense at the moment.

  1. Another mistake. 1.8 million for 2 years? We could have used that money and the Niskanen money on a better free agent Braun will be lucky in the next two years if he is 3rd pairing defense at best . Probably a 7th defenseman by the end of his contract.
