Tony DeAngelo was supposed to be shipped back to the Carolina Hurricanes, but apparently there is a holdup in the deal. What is the holdup? Why hasn’t DeAngelo been traded yet? The deal has hit a snag, and Pierre LeBrun explains the reason well:

DeAngelo was supposed to be shipped back to Carolina for a low end prospect, and that deal could become complete on July 8, unless Briere finds another trading partner for DeAngelo. The Flyers will retain 50% making his cap hit $2.5 million. This is a great deal for the Hurricanes on paper, as they will be receiving a 37-40 point defenseman for peanuts.

Since the Flyers are supposed to eat money, the Hurricanes should throw in a second to a fifth round pick for compensation of said retained money. Daniel Briere is a smart businessman, and that was made quite evident with the Ivan Provorov deal. Obviously, things were pretty bad in Philly for DeAngelo to possibly be shipped out for nothing, but fair is fair. The Hurricanes should attach at least a fifth round pick for DeAngelo’s services.

Briere shouldn’t give anybody away for free, if the Flyers are going to retain 50% of DeAngelo’s salary, then a fifth round pick should be given in return, not just a low end prospect. However, the Flyers have decided they want to move on from Tony DeAngelo, regardless of what it takes. They would like this player off their roster. Briere did not trade for him in the first place, so this isn’t on him.

  1. DeAngelo, like Hayes, had a very visible feud with Tortorella so the Flyers weren’t in the best positions on either to trade. Other teams will always take advantage of that. Fletcher strikes again on both players.
