Tyson Foerster is having a rough start to the 2026-27 season for the Flyers, so the “bench him” take is understandable right now.Through 13 games he’s got just 2 goals, 1 assist (3 points), and a -5 rating while averaging around 17:30 of ice time. That’s a clear step down from the form that got him an 8-year, $7.1M AAV extension this summer (after previous seasons of 20+ and 25 goals).

Foerster also missed a game earlier this month with a hand injury from blocking a shot and looked like he was in some pain again after another blocked shot in last night’s OT loss to Columbus (though he still finished with an assist and a +2).

A short stint on the bench or a demotion in the lineup to lower-pressure minutes could make sense while he shakes off the slow start and any lingering effects from last year’s long arm injury. He’s still a big, physical right shot who can score and play a responsible two-way game when he’s going, and the Flyers clearly see him as a core piece long-term. Early-season slumps happen—especially after missing most of the previous year.

Whether it’s a full benching or just a temporary drop in role, the numbers support the frustration. We’ll see how the coaching staff handles it tonight against Washington.
