For young Flyers prospect Jackson Cates, Flyers Developmental Camp in 2019 was unlike any other camp he participated in. Many do not know that he attended the Minnesota Wild’s Developmental Camp in 2018-19. He left quite the impression on the Flyers top brass, however, so much so, they signed Jackson Cates to a two-year ELC yesterday worth an AAV of $925,000 that begins this season. I remember Jackson being so easy going much like his younger brother Noah, “It’s a lot of fun so far, it’s pretty special, it’s another thing we can cross off the list,” Jackson said to me following a practice at Flyers Developmental Camp in 2019. “I’m just trying to learn as much as I can.”
Noah and Jackson are the “Bash Brothers”. They played together for the University of Minnesota-Duluth, and well, they are together practically 24/7. Noah and Jackson were roommates, and took the same classes, as both young men were in the business field.
This young up and coming prospect in Jackson Cates was born on September 28, 1997, in Stillwater, Minnesota. Cates chose to stay close to home to attend the University of Minnesota Duluth, following his great playing days at Stillwater High School, where he amassed 20 goals and 33 assists in 25 games played in 2015-16.
The young Bulldogs product in Jackson Cates has become quite the stud with the Bulldogs, where he has amassed 27 goals, and 37 assists for a total of 64 points in 96 games played. It appears he has continued his success from the 2019 season, as he won a National Championship in his freshman season.
Cates is a great skater, and that is one reason I believe he could be a solid bottom six NHL player, to his ceiling being a top six player on the second line. He has great vision of the ice, and can play both the power play and penalty kill. Cates has really turned into a nice two-way player, and he can board battle too.
His brother Noah is right behind him with signing an ELC (Entry-Level Contract), and hopefully that is announced in the coming days. Whatever the case may be for Jackson he will report to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in the coming days following quarantine.
No comments because Flyers fans are ambivalent. We don’t give a shit anymore.
Noah Cates was another great late round pick by ex Flyers GM Ron Hextall. Hopefully, both Jackson and Noah push each other and continue to improve as they work their way up the chain to becoming future Flyers. Anyone who watched Noah Cates play for Team USA in the World Junior Tournament a couple of years ago, had to be impressed. I really like his 200 foot game and special team play. Noah has a great shot to make Flyers in a year or two.
