After a big victory in Pittsburgh last game (Thursday, April 15th) it was a different story on Saturday afternoon in South Philadelphia where the red hot Washington Capitals kept finding ways to get goals each time they had great opportunities once they handled the puck. I broke down each goal below. Here is how it all went down.
Just 3:38 in to the opening period, Alexander Ovechkin made a wicked snap shot goal from a great pass by John Carlson that sped right past Flyers goaltender Alex Lyon that made it a 1-0 Capitals lead.Â
19:59 into the first period, the Flyers tied the game up at one a piece when Ivan Provorov got a nice feed from Claude Giroux to the left side of the ice and ripped right past Ilya Samsonov that puck the puck on the right side of the goal.
Thirty-three seconds in to the second period, the Capitals got the lead in result to a solid snap shot by Dmitry Orlov that skidded past Flyers goaltender Alex Lyon’s skin pad and the Capitals went up 2-1.
About midway through the second period, Nicolas Aube-Kubel did a fantastic job defending the puck during the Flyers line change, and made a brilliant pass to James van Riemsdyk when he put it through the five hole on a breakaway goal to put the Flyers back in the game, 2-2.
Alexander Ovechkin ripped one right past Alex Lyon off a face off and the puck landed on the right side of Lyon to make it a 3-2 Capitals lead.
Tom Wilson made a great pass to Evgeny Kuznetsov who made a good looking wrist shot that made Alex Lyon a little tricked up for a goal to make the score 4-2.
With 12:58 left in the final period, Kevin Hayes set up Wade Allison for a great goal where Allison was on the left hand side of the goal, and Ilya Samsanov got tripped up thinking Hayes was gonna go take the shot at goal. However, Allison made a fast snap shot for the goal. The Capitals were still up by one goal, 4-3. It was Wade Allison’s first National Hockey League goal. It was a big moment for him.
Midway through the third period after a faceoff, Capitals Justin Schultz made a good snap shot that got tipped by Conor Sheary that blazed past Alex Lyon for the goal to make the score 5-3. Anthony Mantha iced it with an empty net goal to make the score 6-3 Capitals.
“I’ll have to buy Haysey a dinner with that easy one,” Wade Allison said following the game.
“It was exceptionally difficult,” Alex Lyon said. I like my preparation and take pride in my preparation. But that’s what I get paid to do.”
The Flyers are now 20-18-6.
NEXT UP: The Flyers are back at it on Sunday, April 18th against the 27-13-4 New York Islanders at the Wells Fargo Center at 6:30 PM EST. The game can be seen on NBCSN and NBC Sports Philadelphia.
