Gritty is the official mascot for the Flyers, and he has taken the City of Philadelphia by storm in just his two years of existence. Not just Philly though, he has taken the NHL by storm. He is a 7-foot furry orange creature with googly eyes who wears Flyers’ gear. Gritty is often compared to the Philadelphia Phillies mascot the Phillie Phanatic.

He was featured on Saturday Night Live, has paraded and danced on top of a fire truck through Delaware County, flown in helicopters, has rappelled from the rafters of the Wells Fargo Center, given tons of popcorn baths to people, and has thrown a piece of pizza in the air in New York. All of these accomplishments are great, but there is just one more one thing Gritty has done…he was acquitted of assault on February 3, 2020.

On February 3, 2020, the Philadelphia Police Department acquitted Gritty of assault, in which Gritty supposedly punched a 13-year-old in the back after an exclusive event held for season ticket holders on November 19, 2019. Since Gritty’s acquittal the Flyers have been on a tear to a whopping 23-10 record, to include the playoffs in the bubble.

Gritty has become iconic in Philadelphia. He has become a staple in Flyers land, and throughout the NHL. Hopefully this stat since he was acquitted of assault continues to favor the Flyers this coming season.
