After the Flyers 4-1 defeat to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday (leaving them 0-2-2 to start the 2026-27 season), Flyers’ Head Coach Rick Tocchet was blunt in his postgame comments:

- “We just didn’t compete. There was some pockets there. We came, but not enough compete in this group right now. It’s on me.”
- “It’s hard to do it consistently. Starts with me. Like, this team is way too comfortable, and it did not compete tonight.”

This fits a pattern from the first few games. Tocchet has already called out the team’s intensity, defensive-zone play (“worst D-zone I’ve ever seen” after the 7-0 opener vs. Pittsburgh), lack of puck battles, and overall effort multiple times. The Flyers have been heavily outshot early and look soft in key areas.
It’s a rough start for Tocchet’s second year with the club after last season’s surprising playoff run.

I think this season’s start by the Flyers is HUGELY concerning–getting outshot 2-1 and only 5 goals thru 4 games. Why? What gives here? This is largely on Tocchet…..not an once of improvement on the PP either.
I’m very concerned. If they don’t get it together soon this could be a very, very long season.
