Maier is a young goaltender signed on a one-year two-way AHL contract by the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Maier was signed following the Rookie series that was played against the New York Rangers.

The 6’0” goaltender from Yorkton, SK had a solid 31-win season with a record of 31 – 23 – 4 in the 2021-22 season. The netminder capped off his career with 122 career wins with the Saskatoon Blades, setting a WHL record. He was second in Major Juniors and led all WHL goalies in games played. He appeared in 60 of the 68 games for the Blades last season.

Maier has carried the heavy workload over to North America where he plays every night whether he’s in Reading or Lehigh Valley. Earlier in the season I asked head coach, James Henry, how big it is that you can rely on a young goaltender like Maier.

“His resume kind of indicates that he’s used to a big workload, so not really too concerned about him playing the back-to-backs, and you know being up to the challenge… he’s a confident young player…”

The young goaltender likes that he can be relied on by his coaches and teammates and he can rely upon and support them too, it gives him a nice confidence boost.

“Whenever he calls on me I’m going to be ready and whenever I gotta take my turn and support the guys on the bench I’ll be ready to do that too so it’s nice knowing that I can kind of trust him and he can trust me to put me out on the back-to-back.”

The rookie goaltender since then has taken the starting spot for the Royals when he’s active on the roster. So far as of January 26th, 2023 Maier has a record of 11 – 4 – 1, with a 2.35 GAA and .911 SV%. It’s been remarkable to see the young goaltender be able to progress and take care of the heavy workload night in and night out.
