Oliver Bonk, Flyers’ 2023 first-round pick (22nd overall), is preparing to compete for an NHL roster spot in the upcoming 2026-27 season after limited NHL experience last year.
The 21-year-old right-shot defenseman (born January 9, 2005; listed around 6’2) spent most of 2025-26 with the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms (46 GP, 6 G, 13 A, 19 points) after an upper-body injury delayed his pro debut until December. He earned a late-season call-up, scoring a goal and adding an assist in his NHL debut on April 14, 2026, in a 4-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens (16:28 TOI). He also appeared in one playoff game against Carolina.
Heading into the new season, openings exist after the departures of Emil Andrae (traded) and Noah Juulsen (unsigned). Flyers Assistant General Manager Brent Flahr said after 2026 development camp that Oliver Bonk “Will challenge at camp (for a top-six starting spot)” and “may force our hand,” praising his hockey IQ and composure. Bonk himself stated he is determined to push for a full-time role: “I’m doing everything I can to help this year. I’m going to make a push this year.”
General Manager Danny Brière has indicated that Bonk and David Jiříček will get every opportunity to crack the opening-night roster. However, a numbers game died exist in Philly, especially with the addition of a veteran Defenseman in Simon Benoit. Jiříček is also no pongers waivers exempt, whereas, Bonk is, so that could force his hand back to Lehigh to start the season, as well.
Flyers Rookie Camp begins September 11, 2026 (at PPL Center in Allentown, with games vs. Rangers rookies), followed by main training camp on September 17. Bonk is on the rookie camp roster and is viewed as a strong internal candidate alongside other prospects.
Bonk plays a smart two-way game, puck-moving ability, and defensive awareness as strengths, though continued physical development remains a focus. He is expected to compete primarily for third-pairing minutes (with possible power-play looks) if he sticks, or to play bigger minutes in the AHL otherwise.
This aligns with earlier themes from prior camps where Bonk has spoken about aiming to make the roster and relying on his hockey IQ.
