Oliver Bonk has earned the right to stay up with the Flyers right now.

he 21-year-old (2023 first-rounder, 22nd overall) was recalled from AHL Lehigh Valley on October 11 amid injuries to Cam York and Rasmus Ristolainen. He’s been thrown into top-pair minutes (often with Travis Sanheim), averaging around 20 minutes a night, and has responded well after a rough debut.

Key points from his early 2026-27 stretch:

  • 0 goals, 2 assists
  • Heavy ice time, including tough matchups (e.g., solid underlying numbers against Nathan MacKinnon/Colorado)
  • Puck-moving, calm under pressure, and ability to bounce back from mistakes — traits coaches and observers keep highlighting
  • He’s looked like a legitimate NHL contributor rather than a temporary fill-in

Sending Bonk back down when the injured guys return doesn’t feel realistic at this point. The conversation has shifted to what role he plays going forward, not whether he stays. His makeup, pedigree (two Memorial Cups with London, strong junior production), and the way he’s handled the jump make a strong case to keep him. Bonk’s forcing the issue in a positive way for a Flyers defense that needed a spark.
