It’s a breath of fresh air in Flyer land these days. Flyers’ Head Coach John Tortorella has said over and over again that the locker room has a better feel this season, and he might be right. So much so, the Flyers just continue to dominate top-tier opponents, while proving their naysayers wrong in the same process. This team was not supposed to be this good so soon, but here we are.

“It’s the f..kin Philadelphia Flyers. The first time I went over the Walt Whitman Bridge, I’ve been stuck here in Voorhees, it’s f..kin Philly. I got so f..kin excited.” – John Tortorella

If this can’t pump up a team, I don’t know what will. The quote above reminds me of Herb Brooks talking to his American team before playing the Russian team “Tonight is your night, there night is done,” and the rest is history. Tortorella gets it, and he’s trying to build a connection with the fanbase of Philadelphia. He’s trying to change the culture, and that will not happen overnight. The Flyers hired a former Stanley Cup winning Head Coach John Tortorella to a four year deal, worth $16 million. Some forget he won a Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning back in the 2003-04 season.

Congrats to Tortorella as he now moved into 10th place all-time among coaches with 723 victories. This was after defeating the top team in the league the Vancouver Canucks last night 4-1

Tortorella is known to be a hard-nosed coach, who commands the most from his players. He is not afraid of benching or calling out star studded players either. He ran a tough camp once again, and made the Flyers tougher in the process. He runs a rigorous tough camp to test players mentally, that’s mainly what the skating portion of camp is. They are seeing the results on the ice this season, and this young Flyers team gives a ton of effort. The orange and black have become a watchable, fun hockey team in the process.

The one thing I love about Tortorella he gets it. Last night before the game he said, “One thing I love about Philly is our alumni. I’ve been able to have conversations with them, and talk about Mr. Snider. I wish I had an opportunity to get to know him better. So many people hold him in such high regard. I wish I could have experienced that.”

He continues to pay homage to someone who brought hockey to the City of Philadelphia. Tortorella has done his homework about the history of the Flyers, yet some want him terminated for winning. He gives credit to the past, as he should. One thing rings true about Tortorella, he gets it and it should come as no shock his team is excelling on the ice because of such.
