As Flyers fans wake up this morning. They can see their team sitting in third place in the Metropolitan Division, with a chance to move into second place in the division with a victory tonight over the Arizona Coyotes.
This is pretty impressive, considering the Flyers have had off since Monday night. Without further delay, here are our answers to your questions.
John Tortorella commands the most from his players, on and off the ice. Off the ice, is equally as important to what transpires on the ice. Tortorella noticed that Joel Farabee legged a goal, and did not give 100% effort on a back check that lead to the first goal scored by the New Jersey Devils. Obviously, from what Tortorella said he has talked to the entire team about this before the incident began.
“He didn’t listen,” Tortorella said following the game as to why Farabee was benched. Tortorella has to coach 22 other players on the roster. If he allows Farabee to get away with this, then what will the other players do? Will they follow suit? How can he punish Farabee for this, and say not punish Scott Laughton for example if Laughton legged a goal? Farabee knows what he did, and took it in stride, actually I giver him credit for that. He’s a good player that should have known better, and Farabee would tell you this.
Commanding the most out of his players is just one reason why the Flyers currently sit in third place in the Metropolitan Division. Honestly, no one knows the truth behind Morgan Frost, are there off ice issues? Has Tortorella explained to him to do something, and he fails to do it? No one really knows why he is benched at times. Coaching is difficult, if a coach wins they are the greatest, if they lose, “Hell no fire him/her.” The Flyers are winning games, and it’s still not good enough for some people. The youth are playing, let’s see what transpires.
Frost has been given a good shot at sticking with the club, with the unfortunate injury to Noah Cates. I like Frost, so let’s see how he does. On the surface it’s easy to point things out wrong, but it may be just speculation. No one will fully know the truth.
Kevin Hayes, a former member of Boston College, reached out to Cutter Gauthier in the Summer, “Reached out to me and we actually met up and went golfing. Such a great guy. Definitely a role model of mine, someone to look up to moving forward. He’s been awesome since Day 1. Always reaching out, giving me calls and checking up,” Gauthier told SB Nation. Hayes is an alum of Boston College, why wouldn’t he take Gauthier under his wing and act like he cares about him?
Gauthier played a lot of hockey last season, to include the World Juniors and the Summer Showcase. He needed a break from the rink as to why Gauthier did not attend Flyers Developmental Camp. Gauthier hasn’t declined anything, in relation to the media, as a matter of fact I interviewed him this past February. If he was declining the media of everything, how was I able to interview him? These are non stories, the guy needed a break, at the end of the day we as people sometimes forget these athletes are human beings, not robots.
No one knows if Carter Hart, Travis Konecny, or Owen Tippett will re-sign here past outlier of their control of being an RFA, either after their seventh NHL season or at the age of 27. What do all three have in common though? All three of these aforementioned players love the City of Philadelphia, and like playing there.
Who knows how things will play out, but as it stands Hart, Konecny, and Tippett are good building blockr, or a foundation of success in the future with the orange and black. Let’s see what transpires.
