Flyers veterans Sean Couturier (Captain), Travis Konecny, and Travis Sanheim publicly supported and defended Matvei Michkov during recent exit interviews.

This came after a challenging second NHL season for the young Russian forward (drafted 7th overall in 2023). Michkov faced high expectations, adjustment struggles to North American hockey/life, criticism for defensive play or inconsistency at times (including in playoffs), and overall pressure as a highly touted prospect.

Key points from the teammates:

  • Travis Konecny emphasized how much Michkov has gone through just adapting to the NHL and North America, saying he “can’t imagine” dealing with it and highlighting team support and Michkov’s work ethic.
  • Travis Sanheim noted that Michkov has faced more pressure than anyone on the team and pushed back against critics questioning his fit or performance.
  • Sean Couturier (and the group) stressed it’s only Michkov’s second year, that he’ll learn and improve from the experience, and reinforced the strong team dynamic and leadership backing him.

This shows veteran leadership rallying around a key young piece of the Flyers’ future core amid a season that had ups and downs (The Flyers made the playoffs but faced early challenges). Michkov has shown elite offensive skill and playmaking flashes, but like many young players, the full adjustment takes time. Teammates’ comments counter any narrative of internal issues or giving up on him.
