Philadelphia Flyers Top Russian Goaltending Prospect Alexei Kolosov joins Ivan Fedotov in Philadelphia after departing from Dinamo Minsk and the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).
Philadelphia Flyers top Russian prospect Alexei Kolosov, 22, has reportedly arrived in Voorhees, New Jersey, according to Anthony Di Marco of The Fourth Period. The Belarusian goaltender flew into Voorhees around midnight on Sunday.
Dinamo Minsk announced on Tuesday that Kolosov would be leaving the club to continue his professional career in the Philadelphia Flyers organization. Minsk stated in a press release thanking Kolosov for his time and that he would leave the team as one of their most “loved” players and the best goalie in their franchise’s history.
Despite the exciting news, it took until Saturday evening into Sunday morning for Kolosov to arrive in Voorhees, New Jersey, after a ten-and-a-half-hour-long flight from Istanbul to New Jersey. On top of adding Kolosov to the goaltending mix, in one sweep, the Flyers also retrieved 2015 seventh-round pick Ivan Fedotov, 27, from CSKA in the KHL. Fedotov arrived in Voorhees, NJ. on Friday, with Kolosov following on Easter Sunday.
CSKA, Fedotov’s club, terminated his two-year contract on Thursday, which the Finish-born netminder signed this past summer — after the first year, he had the ability to opt out of the contract. So, he did and is back in the orange and black for the first time in over two years.
Flyers General Manager Daniel Briere was uncertain when either goaltender would be in America, stating the club did not have an exact timetable due to visa (P-1A) and other complications. However, thanks to persistence from the staff, they cleared everything for their arrival in Voorhees, New Jersey.
This was something nobody expected but the Flyers. Rookie regime GM Daniel Briere, President of Hockey Operations Keith Jones and company had reportedly been working with Fedotov and his camp for weeks in order to get the 6-foot-8 goaltender to Philadelphia.
The plan was for Kolosov to play in the American Hockey League (AHL) before earning time in the NHL, giving time for the 22-year-old to adjust to a different style of game and all sorts of different gurus. With the addition of Fedotov, that more than solidifies it.
The Flyers loaned Felix Sandstrom back to Lehigh Valley while adding Ivan Fedotov to the main roster. The Lehigh Valley Phantoms reassigned goaltender Parker Gahagen to Reading (ECHL), opening a roster spot for Kolosov, joining Sandstrom and Cal Petersen between the pipes in Allentown.
