For the first time since the 2017 NHL Entry Draft Nolan Patrick and Morgan Frost are playing their first meaningful pro game together. Back in 2017, Ron Hextall, had a strong draft, that saw the Flyers acquire an additional 1st round pick to later select, under the radar prospect, Morgan Frost. Frost had an explosive post draft season and expectations skyrocketed making him a perfect compliment to Patrick, who was the 2nd overall pick in the draft.
They both started out of the gate fast, and quite frankly made mostly positive plays in the first period. For instance, Frost threaded a nice pass on his very first shift of the game to Travis Konecny, who shot the puck wide. However, Frost drew a penalty moments later, and that had to make Head Coach Alain Vigneault feel good about #48. In the end, Frost did fall victim to his old habits of not having a quick step in the third period, but it was also his first game since March of 2020. Frost was great at the faceoff circle as he finished the game 7-12 on draws for a whopping 53.8% faceoff percentage. There was a lot to like of #48 and #19 last night.
With the talent level of both Patrick and Frost added in the first round, it is potentially as impactful as adding Ivan Provorov and Travis Konecny in the 2015 Draft. While Patrick and Frost still have not made the same level of impact on the Flyers, they’re both well on their way to reaching that point. Regardless of the early results of the season, Flyers fans should expect both players to play pivotal roles in the NHL. I would not be surprised if both Nolan Patrick and Morgan Frost are the top two centers on the Flyers when the new generation takes hold.
