The Flyers season begins against their interstate rival in the Pittsburgh Penguins. The game started out slow, but the Flyers were able to do some things they lacked in the playoffs, score and score again on the Power Play. Last season, concluded in an all important game 7, and they couldn’t do either of those. However, that was not the case tonight, and here are some very promising notes to take from the season opener- Let’s dive into it!
“The Pecoooooo Power Play”
After such a disappointing effort with the Power play in the playoffs last season (7.7% success rate). The Philadelphia Flyers roared in with two goals with the man advantage in the firstst period alone to get the scoring going. One of those goals was scored by Nolan Patrick, who missed all of last season due to a migraine disorder. Having a strong Power Play will be a main focus in the overall success of the team this year, especially with a shortened season. They must take advantage of those golden opportunities.
Matt Niskanen out/Erik Gustafsson in
The Flyers didn’t know what was going to happen when veteran defenseman Matt Niskanen decided to retire at the end of the 2020 season. Signing Defenseman Erik Gustafsson was the route they took- and it paid off in the season opener. He assisted on the first two Power Play goals of the season with great shots from the blue line. One on a redirect to JVR, and one to Nolan Patrick. Looks like things will be ok on the blue line after all. Sending the best of luck to Matt Niskanen’s future endeavors with his retirement from the NHL
Big night for the Farabee
As the years go forward, and a new season starts, Flyers fans start talking about the veterans decrease in points, and other statistical issues. That being said, The young flyers keep getting better and better. Joel Farabee is at the top of that list tonight with a goal and 3 assists in the first regular season. A 4 point night for Joel Farabee. Extremely promising to see him have a strong start.
