Travis Sanheim was relatively unknown when he was drafted and was not expected to be a top-pairing defenseman and when initially drafted. But Ron Hextall and Chris Pryor (the previous Flyers team development duo) saw something different. They saw a future top defenseman who had all of the tools to be a top player in the league. Years later we are starting to see that vision come to light. At the WHL, AHL, and NHL level Sanheim’s success has always relied on confidence and it typically takes him some time to adjust to each jump in competition. However, when he does the results are fantastic as he can show moments of pure two-way domination. He’s the type of player who needs extra time, but waste’s none of it. Sanheim has all of the skills to end up as a top-pairing defenseman with the Flyers and is arguable already reaching that role. Whether it’s running the power play or playing a pivotal role on the penalty kill, Sanheim can do it all. He was the start of the Flyers back-end rebuild years ago and he’s definitely a defining member of it. I believe Sanheim’s best performances are still yet to come.
