Recently, there have been rumors the Flyers are interested in Laine, but again, they are just rumors, not real trade talks. Yesterday, news did come out that the Jets are “seriously” interested in listening to trade offers for Laine. With the need of a sniper forward, the Flyers could pursue. As of now, two teams that seem to be very interested are the Columbus Blue Jackets and Carolina Hurricanes. The Canadiens, who were interested for a while, decided that they will not pursue.

One issue with Laine is his contract is over at the end of the 2020-21 season. Some teams may be worried about taking on a potential lucrative contract extension, or an arbitration.

Now, what would the package be? There are a few things the Flyers could do to acquire the sniper.

Below are some submitted CapFriendly Mock Trades:

Looking at this mock trade, it doesn’t seem too bad. Getting rid of two main roster players, Shayne Gosisbehere and James Van Riemsdyk, are talks of the Flyers as of late. The Flyers are looking to clear some cap space, as well as giving their young guys and upcoming rookies a spot on the roster for upcoming seasons. If we had to give them two up, it really would not affect the team too much. Although, Rubtsov and Zamula are two of the Flyers best prospects in the system, Zamula being a little more valuable. If the Jets were to inquire on a player like Zamula, it may make the Flyers management hesitate. Lastly for the picks, the fourth-rounder is nothing, but the first-rounder could be something. No matter where the Flyers finish next season or the season after that, these next few draft years are going to be spectacular. As for next year, there are some potential first-round guys that could catch the eye of Flyers scouts. It would stink to not have a first-rounder for the 2021 NHL Draft, but overall, if the Flyers trade for a player like Laine, it would definitely improve the scoring on the team.

As mentioned above, the Flyers will look to dump some salary. Here it is not the case. But if the Flyers are serious about trading for Laine, this is something I can see them doing. A guy that has been on the trade radar for a while. Shayne Gostisbehere. He is a player the Jets would strongly take into consideration. The Jets would also be getting two very good prospects in Mason Millman and Jay O’Brien. Millman has the potential to be a top-six defenseman, while O’Brien has the potential to be a middle-six forward. Then for the first-round pick, it is a great pick up for the Jets, as the 2020 NHL Draft is one of the deepest in a very long time. In all, this trade would turn out great for both teams.

Van Riemsdyk would be an option for the Jets. His contract may be an issue with how he has performed as of late, but a new team might change minds. He could go to a new team and perform much better then he has. This also may be the same situation for Flyers prospect Mikhail Vorobyov. This season, Vorobyov left the Flyers organization to go back to his native country of Russia to play for Salavat Yulaev Ufa of the Kontinental Hockey League. Vorobyov’s problem with the Flyers is that he was too good for the AHL and not good enough for the NHL. It also happens that the Flyers have a lot of depth in their system, so he never got too much time with the big boys. If a team like the Jets acquired him, it would give the organization some inspiration to work with him, because he still has the potential to be a great player. Nolan Patrick included in this trade may very well interest the Jets. While he has had many injury issues, he is still very young and has the potential to be a star. The numbers aren’t there yet, but he has shown on the ice why he still deserves to be the second-overall selection in the 2017 NHL Draft, and there is still much more to show. This may be the only player included in this trade to twist Flyers fans heads.

Overall

In the end, depending on what the Flyers give up to trade for Laine, I believe trading for Laine would be great for the Flyers. Laine is a true sniper and goal scorer, which is something the Flyers could benefit from extremely. Laine’s only weakness is the ability to play well defensively. If you slot him in with a two-way forward like Sean Couturier, it would make Laine’s game flourish.

  1. Sorry but hate this, even if it rids of us JVR and Ghost, our new Lecavalier and MacDonald, respectively. Much rather see them go after a stud D-man than a sniper if cost is no issue. Snipers come to the Flyers to die. Replace Pronger once and for all already and the offense will follow from having the D better locked down. It may be impossible, but I’ve said previously that Sergachev fits that bill. And I would be willing to trade any of our cheap prospects/players to get him (since TB won’t take salary) including Patrick, Farrabee and Morin/Zamula. And if TB were somehow interested in Ghost or even TK in a trade involving Sergachev, I would listen.

    1. Sergachev a replacement for pronger wth are you smoking…the guy the was traded for John Druin…I mean he’s good I think more of a offensive type which we already have plenty of but defiantly not a number 1 dman

      1. I wasn’t saying Sergachev was a like for like replacement for Pronger. He’s only 22 and he lets everyone else slot in a better place. My point was we keep jerking around on the margins in free agency and trades for D-men since Pronger retired with generally poor results. See, for example, Grossman, Luke Schenn, Streit, MacDonald, Gudas and, most recently, Niskanen and Braun.

So I am arguing to go get a foundational guy we can build around in the future and Sergachev fits that bill for me. If you think he’s just another offensive defenseman and don’t see top pair potential in him, then, well, we’ll see in a another year or two. I see Provovov and Sergachev potentially giving us a top pair that could rival any of the best pairs we’ve seen over the years.

  2. Fletcher will get fleeced if he trades for Laine. Howevever, I would try to trade for Laine by offering Flyers 1st pick in upcoming draft, plus Cam York, Jake Voracek, JVR, and Claude Giroux. If Giroux won’t drop his no movement clause, the whole trade is off and Flyers just buy out the last two years of Giroux’s contract and put him out to pasture.

    1. Lol where are these people coming from oh ya sure trade over 20million in salaries jvr g voracek and for good measure our best young dman for laine and his 7 million children n salary

  3. I’ve been a Flyer fan since 1973 you people make me sick GHOST was awesome had some knee problems let’s get rid of him JVR is playing on 3rd 4th line because of RANGER coach with 2 other former head coaches won 1 cup with Lundguist Vorachek Girioux next OPEN your eyes

  4. Cam York is someone we can build around!
Trade our 1st , Frost , Ghost and something else for Laine

  5. Our power play could use a legitimate sniper but have to be careful about over compensating for a one dimensional, streaky player
