Some people ha e posted that John Tortorella does not develop players, and that is one reason he was not the right fit for a rebuild. This Flyers team is young, but even though Tortorella is a tough hard-nosed coach, that does not mean players aren’t developing.

“I wish I had him when I was 18 coming in the league. I feel like I’ve taken big steps under him,” Flyers Defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen said. Ristolainen looks like an entirely different player under Tortorella. He looks confident, has swagger, and bulldozes players at the right times. Ristolainen isn’t always looking for the hit, rather he plays well defensively.

It’s not just Ristolainen, Tortorella is developing some other players, as well, to include Noah Cates, Bobby Brink, Travis Sanheim, Samuel Ersson, Cam York, Sean Walker, Nick Seeler, Travis Konecny, Owen Tippett, and Carter Hart.

“Outstanding. Sanny’s out, and we move him up,” John Tortorella said of Rasmus Ristolainen’s play. “He’s been impressive because he’s missed a lot of hockey (Injury). I look at Erss (Ersson) and him and they just keep getting better and better.”

Tortorella is known to be a hard-nosed coach, who commands the most from his players. He is not afraid of benching or calling out star studded players either. This was one reason why the majority of the Flyers team reported early for training camp. They also knew that they would have to give their all to fight to stay in the lineup.

It’s become apparent as some have excelled, and some have had difficulties learning this, but on most nights the Flyers do not have a problem with effort. The team may not be talented enough to beat stiff competition or playoff bound teams on a nightly basis, but they do fight and claw their way into games nine times out of 10.

For their efforts and John Tortorella’s development of players, this has propelled this team to the 11th best team in the league, and second place in the Metropolitan Division.
