Cam Atkinson missed the entire 2022-23 season with an unfortunate injury, and he was looking to get cleared for contact approximately two weeks following exit interviews.

During the Summer months many players like to attend summer leagues or develop their own type of scrimmages to train, stay fresh, and hit the ice. Atkinson took to the ice in Columbus at Battery Hockey Camp. Anytime Atkinson hit the ice, it was a huge plus, “I’m excited to get going, and prove some people wrong.”

Atkinson remains a pillar in the Columbus community, as he has his eyes on Flyers training camp in preparation for the 2023-24 season. He hopes to right the ship from last season, so Atkinson is happy to get back to work, “I’m ready to get back to work.”

For those reasons listed above, Atkinson got off to a hot start, scoring, scoring, and scoring some more. However, that was then and this is now, and Atkinson hasn’t scored a goal since November 11, 2023 against the Los Angeles Kings. He’s still sits with eight goals on the season and has registered 10 assists in 37 games played.

With that, Atkinson has had somewhat of a lazy play, as he has taken some bad penalties at the wrong times. The Flyers are gaining momentum in certain games, but would find themselves behind the eight ball on the road trip due to bad penalties by Atkinson. That is more than likely the main reason for him being benched tonight against the Columbus Blue Jackets. It’s nothing personal, and he will tell you his play needs to get better.

Morgan Frost

Frost, 24, has become new stranger to benchings. He has been benched 10 times this season and has tallied five goals and six assists in 27 games played this season.

Along with Atkinson, Frost will also be benched. His play has been so far as of late, as he has been very inconsistent at making plays. One game he’s noticeable, the next two not so much. Consistency is the key for him for the rest of the season, as he continues to get a chance to play for the orange and black. When Noah Cates returns it will only get tougher for him to stay in the lineup.

Both players are class acts, and both will tell you they have to do more to stay in the lineup. They understand this is a business and performance is key. Consistency is the name of the game for both of these players moving forward, and I expect nothing less from either.

Rhett Gardner

Gardner can play both wing and Center, but with him in the lineup he could wind up being the fourth line Center tonight.
