Physical Profile and Playing Style

  • Height/Weight: 6’7 / 240 lbs. He is one of the largest players in his draft class. eliteprospects.com
  • Shoots: Left.
  • Position: Defense (left-shot D).
  • Style: Physical, shutdown defenseman known for crushing hits, board pins, fights, and using his massive reach and frame to disrupt plays. He embraces physicality, delivers open-ice hits, and plays a defensive-first game with good mobility and skating for his size. Offensively, he is limited but showed improvement in breakouts and simple puck plays during his OHL rookie season. Nicknamed “The Terminator.”.

Scouts compare his potential to players like Nikita Zadorov or Jamie Oleksiak—a heavy, intimidating presence who can log big minutes as a shutdown D.

Early Life and Junior Career

  • Birthplace: Petropavl (Petropavlovsk), Kazakhstan. He is of Russian heritage and played much of his early hockey in Russia. en.wikipedia.org
  • He developed in the Yunost program in Yekaterinburg, Russia (associated with SKA-Yunost), competing in Russian youth leagues (U15/U16/U17) with strong plus-minus ratings and some offensive production at younger levels. eliteprospects.com
  • In 2024–25, he moved to North America and joined the Atlantic Coast Academy 16U AAA program, where he put up impressive numbers: 84 points (34G-50A) in 65 games, ranking as one of the team’s top scorers. He had committed to the University of Maine (NCAA) earlier. acahockey.com
  • Selected 119th overall in the 2025 CHL Import Draft by the London Knights. Signed with them in August 2025.

2025–26 OHL Season (Rookie Year with London Knights):

44 GP, 2G-6A-8PTS, +10, 49 PIM. Limited early ice time but improved significantly as the season progressed. In playoffs: 5 GP, 0 points.

Sokolovskii has youth tournament success, including Districts Cup and Russia U15 titles/medals.

NHL Draft and Future

  • 2026 NHL Draft: Picked 27th overall by the Flyers (after they traded back). He was a riser due to his size, physical tools, and late-season improvement; pre-draft rankings placed him in the late first to mid-second round range.
  • Unsigned prospect; expected long development path (likely several years before NHL readiness, common for big defensemen). He has NCAA rights with Maine but is in the OHL.

Strengths:

Elite size/reach, physicality, defensive range and awareness, skating/mobility for his frame, puck retrievals and simple plays (improving).

Areas to Improve:

Puck handling under pressure, consistency in decision-making/hockey sense, offensive production (raw offensively in the OHL).

Personal Notes

  • He moved to North America seeking better exposure as an NHL prospect.
  • Known for his work ethic and adaptability; improved markedly in his first OHL season despite the jump in competition.

Sokolovskii is a high-upside, high-risk project pick: a rare combination of extreme size and athleticism that could anchor a defensive pairing if his game rounds out. Flyers fans and analysts have highlighted his intimidating presence and potential fit in a physical blue line.

Briere preached patience for him, as his career is still very early-stage.
