It’s too early to call the Flyers draft a clear success or failure—drafts are long-term bets—but the Flyers’ 2026 class looks like a reasonable, defense-heavy haul with some projects, especially given the trade-back strategy.

What the Flyers Did

  • Traded back from 21st overall (their original slot) to 27th with San Jose, gaining extra picks (62nd and 120th). They selected Maksim Sokolovskii (D) at 27.
  • Other notable picks: Brek Liske (D) at 53, Martin Psohlavec (G) at 62, plus later selections including another goalie (Marek Sklenička at 120), a forward (KJ Sauer at 136), and a defenseman (Max Laatikainen at 213). They ended up with six picks total.

The Flyers prioritized size, physicality, and defense (multiple D and big goalies), which aligns with team needs on the blue line.

Key Pick: Maksim Sokolovskii (1st Round, 27th Overall)

  • Profile: Massive 6’7, 238 lbs Russian-born D (London Knights, OHL). Elite physical tools, skating better than expected for his size, shutdown style with big hits, reach, and competitiveness. Raw offensively/puck-moving, with boom-or-bust potential.
  • Fit & Reactions: Flyers were reportedly high on him pre-draft. Many see him as a potential intimidating, fan-favorite shutdown D (Zadorov-like physicality). Some scouts/media grade it as a reach or high-risk (C/C+ grades in places like The Athletic), but others like the athletic upside and note late-season progress.

Rest of the Class

  • Brek Liske (2nd, 53rd): 6’2 right-shot D from Everett (WHL). Improved two-way player with good skating, hands, and compete level. Solid NHL prospect tools, though lacking a elite standout trait. Strong playoff performer.
  • Goalies (Martin Psohlavec and Marek Sklenička): Big goalies with promising junior/international stats. High-risk positions, but size and athleticism give them backup-upside shots.
  • Later picks add depth (KJ Sauer C (136), Max Laatikainen RHD (213).

Overall Assessment

  • Positives: Smart trade-back added volume in a weaker late-first/early-second range. Addressed defensive size/physicality gaps. Sokolovskii has the highest “wow” potential if his puck game develops.
  • Question Marks: Heavy on defense/goalies (harder to project), light on forwards. Sokolovskii is polarizing/raw. Expect 1 regular NHLer from the class as a median outcome per some evaluations.
  • Context: Flyers are rebuilding around prospects like Matvei Michkov; this adds blue-line depth without overreaching wildly.

Bottom line:

A solid, targeted draft rather than a home-run one. Success will depend on Sokolovskii’s development and whether the extra picks yield contributors. Flyers fans should feel okay about adding big, hard-to-play-against pieces—check back in 3–5 years.
