As we edge into the season, this is a great time to take a look into some new things that the Flyers will endure throughout the course of the season, with the likes of a new Captain and some young players/prospects really getting a shot in the big club
The longest tenured Captain in franchise history, former Captain Claude Giroux, was an unrestricted free agent at the end of last season. He eventually ended up signing with the Ottawa Senators, which left the Flyers with no Captain. Fans are anxious wondering who will wear the “C” this season. Let’s take a look at some of the candidates:
Sean Couturier- he’s been a member of the team since 2011 and he has leadership abilities.
Kevin Hayes- who has the ability to pump up the team and shows good leadership abilities as well.
Scott Laughton- who is a veteran that has a serious personality and very loyal to the team.
Moving into younger players/prospects category: two players that really stood out last season were Cam York and Morgan Frost. York will really step up this season as he has a lot of untapped potential. He netted three goals last and tallied seven assists in 30 games played. Cam brings a lot to the team, and he will offer a lot more this season.

Frost, on the other hand, has been off and on with the Flyers. However, due to injures last season he was called up to the big club and Frost wound up playing in 55 games. Frost is an extremely skilled playmaker. Morgan netted five goals and 11 assists during his time with the Flyers last season. Frost became a Restricted Free Agent (RFA) 10.2c as the 2021-22 season expired, and the Flyers signed him to a one-year, one-way contract worth $800,000. Though they both have some more developing, they are both going to bring more to the team this season.
The new guys, Tony DeAngelo and Nicolas Deslauriers
Tony is a very skilled defenseman with a strong hockey IQ. DeAngelo has 34 career goals and 123 assists in 270 NHL games played. He will also help the Flyers lackluster Power Play immensely, and this has been an area of concern for at least the past three to four seasons.
Nic is a player who is not afraid to drop his gloves as he enters the 2022-23 season with 57 fights in the NHl. Deslauriers has a total of 506 career games under his belt, while tallying 44 goals and 41 assists. This team will be interesting to watch this season, and hopefully there is competitive hockey back on Broad Street
