Alexander Ovechkin is on the verge of breaking Wayne Gretzky’s goal record. He scored two goals last night, tying Gretzky’s goal record at 894.

This is very impressive, considering Ovechkin has lost two seasons to a lockout, and also lost a season to a Covid season. That’s a total of 246 games, so to even sniff the record is unreal. Ovechkin also lost well over a month this season to a broken leg too.
“Wayne texted me before the game. He said score three. It’s great,” Ovechkin said last night following the game.
Ovechkin didn’t want to break the goal record by scoring on an open net, “l Carbs right away I didn’t want to do it. Let’s wait. Leo scored his first NHL goal, he’s got such a bright future.”

Wayne Gretzky was obviously in attendance for this game and spoke very highly of Alex, “We always talked about our game the players who were in it from Gordie Howe, Mario Lemieux, Bobby Orr, Messier, on and on. We always wondered what it would be like when they retired then along came Sidney Crosby and Ajed Ovechkin. He’s been so great for the City of Washington. He’s been so great for hockey. “
The Washington Capitals are now off until Sunday at 1230pm. Maybe he breaks the scoring record then.
