At 4-9-4 (12 points) and sitting 8th in the Metropolitan Division—well outside a wild-card spot with roughly 9% playoff odds—the Flyers are past the point where “we competed hard” or “solid last 40 minutes” counts for much.

The Flyers just dropped a 4-2 home decision to Minnesota on Nov. 3 after falling behind 3-0 early, then mounting a push that made the final score look closer than the game felt for long stretches.

Post-game coverage and player comments (including from Trevor Zegras) repeatedly landed on the same theme, moral victories and moral effort don’t put points in the standings when you’ve already dug this kind of hole, “These were games we were winning last year. We can keep saying that (Moral victories), taking positives away, but myself included, we need to start finishing some chances, giving ourselves a better chance early in the game,” Zegras said in his post-game presser.

The underlying issues are clear in the numbers: goals for near the bottom of the league, Power Play struggling, and too many nights where early deficits or missed chances decide the outcome. Recent stretch play has shown some improvement in competitiveness and puck battles, but the wins haven’t followed consistently enough. They play at the New York Rangers tonight. Two points would be a start; moral victories won’t close the gap.
