The Philadelphia Flyers started up another homestand Saturday night with a divisional game against the New York Islanders. Samuel Ersson got his first start in nine days and had himself a solid game overall. Adam Ginning joined the lineup with Egor Zamula getting the night off. Trevor Zegras helped lead the Flyers to victory with two goals and an assist. The Flyers jumped back over hockey .500 at 4-3-1 on the season.
The Islanders got the game’s first powerplay at the 5:52 mark of the first period as Travis Sanheim got called for holding. They had a big scoring chance in tight but Ersson stood his ground. The Flyers also did a nice job clearing the puck when given the opportunity.
Emil Heineman was called for interference at the 9:12 mark of the first which gave the Flyers their first powerplay of the game. The Islanders had a chance while shorthanded and capitalized. A bad pass by Matvei Michkov to a covered Owen Tippett caused a turnover. Simon Holmstrom then took the puck and put a snapshot over the blocker of Ersson. Jean-Gabriel Pageau received the only assist.
Garnet Hathaway delivered a huge hit on Casey Cizikas which caused Scott Mayfield to go after him. The two dropped the gloves in a spirited fight where both players landed a few punches. They’d both get five minutes each for fighting. The fight occurred at the 16:40 mark of the first period.
The Flyers got their second powerplay at the 3:26 mark of the second period as Tony DeAngelo got called for cross-checking. They had trouble setting up early and the Islanders came close to scoring another shorthanded goal. The Flyers had a few chances towards the end, but Bobby Brink fanned on a one-timer.
Anthony Duclair gave the Islanders a 2-0 lead at the 6:15 mark of the second. Marshall Warren fed him with a pass to the left side of the net and Duclair put a snapshot just past the left skate of Ersson. Warren and Anders Lee picked up assists.
The Flyers got on the board at the 10:29 mark of the second period courtesy of Christian Dvorak. Zegras made a no-look pass to him as he was going to the net and Dvorak put a backhander past Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin. Zegras and Michkov tallied assists.
The Islanders got their second powerplay at the 13:30 mark of the second as Dvorak was called for slashing. They only managed to get one shot on net, and the Flyers did a nice job of getting into shooting lanes to block shots.
Zegras scored his first goal as a Flyer just 1:54 into the third period. Dvorak made a drop-back pass as he was driving the net and Zegras put a wrist shot past Sorokin. Dvorak and Jamie Drysdale were awarded assists. This tied the game up at two.
Things continued to get feisty as a lot of scrums continued to break out. At the 2:12 mark of the third, Mayfield, Nikita Grebenkin, Hathaway, and Matthew Schaefer were called for roughing, and Rodrigo Abols and Kyle MacLean were called for fighting. The game stayed at five-on-five.
Maxim Tysplakov gave the Islanders a 3-2 lead at the 4:21 mark of the third period. He deflected Warren’s shot from the blue line past Ersson. Warren and DeAngelo picked up assists.
The Flyers got their third powerplay at the 6:19 mark of the third as Mayfield got called for high-sticking. They’d capitalize on this one as the puck was loose in the blue paint and the Flyers dug away at it. Ultimately, the puck ended up crossing the line for a goal. The goal ended up going to Zegras for his second of the night. Bobby Brink and Cam York received assists.
No more goals were scored in regulation, so the game went to overtime. Ersson had to make a few big saves to keep the Flyers alive. The referees also missed a call on the Islanders for too many men on the ice. No one scored in overtime, so to a shoot-out they’d go.
The Flyers ended up winning in the shoot-out as Zegras and Michkov scored for the orange and block and only Holmstrom for the Islanders.
The Flyers went one for three on the powerplay but killed off the two Islanders man advantages.
Ersson saved 23 of 26 shots, giving him a .885 save percentage.
