Jett Luchanko, the Flyers’ 2024 13th overall draft pick, is poised to compete for a roster spot this Fall, but it’s not guaranteed he’ll make the team. The 19-year-old center impressed last season by making the opening-night roster and becoming the youngest player in franchise history to play in an NHL game, appearing in four contests before returning to the OHL’s Guelph Storm. There, he posted 21 goals and 56 points in 46 games, a 1.22 point-per-game pace, and added six assists in seven AHL playoff games with Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

The Flyers are thin at center, with Sean Couturier, Trevor Zegras, Noah Cates, Christian Dvorak, and others like Rodrigo Abols and Karsen Dorwart in the mix, but Luchanko’s speed, hockey IQ, and two-way play make him a strong candidate. Luchanko also celebrated his 19th birthday this past week.
Luchanko usually plays a mature defensive game and has great passing abilities, though his scoring needs development. Flyers’ General Manager Danny Briere frequently highlights Luchanko as a solution to the team’s center depth issues, and his performance at Training Camp will be critical.

However, Luchanko’s ineligibility for the AHL full-time due to his age (19 by December 31, 2025) means it’s either the NHL or back to the OHL. Luchanko is not eligible to play in the NCAA, as he signed his ELC last year with the Flyers. Playing wing to secure a roster spot is an option, but some argue this could hinder his development as a Center. His numbers suggest he’s close but may need more seasoning, and the Flyers’ crowded Center depth could push him to junior hockey unless he outshines veterans in camp.
Ultimately, Luchanko’s chances depend on his Training Camp performance and the Flyers’ willingness to prioritize his development over veteran options. He’s got a real opportunity, but it’s not a lock.

I believe he can also go to college, can he not?
Lawrence,
Thanks for your response. He is not NCAA eligible, as he signed an ELC last year
I believe he can’t become better if he goes back to the OHL, he’s NHL ready, in my opinion.
