The Flyers did not trade defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen at the 2026 NHL trade deadline, primarily because they stuck firmly to their asking price. After all, no team met the Flyers demands.

It has been widely reported the Flyers demanded a high return—typically described as at least a first-round pick plus additional assets (such as a prospect or more)—comparable to major recent defenseman trades like Brandon Carlo’s move. They refused to lower that bar, even with interest from several teams. So why didn’t Flyers’ General Manager Danny Briere cave in to some interested teams:

  • Ristolainen has one more year left on his contract after this season (through 2026-27) with a $5.1 million cap hit, making him more than just a rental. This extra term meant Philadelphia didn’t have to move him now and could wait for a better offer in the summer or next season.
  • The market for right-shot defensemen was competitive but limited—many contending teams had already spent high picks in prior deals, reducing available first-rounders. What dies this mean? Teams just didn’t want to meet the Flyers demands for Risto. This could help Briere facilitate more deals in the future for Philadelphia.
  • While there was “extensive” interest and a growing market leading up to the deadline, the Flyers prioritized value over moving him for less (e.g., mid-round picks or lesser packages).

Overall, Ristolainen’s health might have been a concern, for what the Flyers were asking for his services. Overall, Danny Briere and the organization viewed the offers as insufficient for a player they see as valuable (especially in a rising cap environment), so they retained him rather than settle. This means he remains with the Flyers, with potential for a future move (or letting the contract expire in 2027, when he’d become a UFA).

“Risto is an important leader in our locker room,” Briere said in his post trade deadline presser. In the end, the Flyers chose to keep Ristolainen, so hopefully he can be moved next trade deadline.
