Denver Barkey definitely seems to enjoy playing alongside Matvei Michkov — and the feeling looks mutual based on their recent chemistry with the Flyers! In the Flyers’ recent game against the Penguins (January 15, 2026), the two young forwards stood out as bright spots in an otherwise tough loss. Barkey picked up two assists, including a great feed to set up Michkov’s goal on a 2-on-1 rush.

They were buzzing together, with Barkey focusing on getting Michkov the puck and creating space. Post-game, Barkey had some high praise, calling Michkov a “such a special player” and saying he’s always trying to feed him the puck while finding open ice. The bond goes beyond just on-ice play too — Michkov showed real teammate loyalty by dropping the gloves for the first time in his NHL career to defend Barkey after a big (but clean) open-ice hit from Blake Lizotte. Barkey was caught off guard by it, but appreciated it big time:

“Not expected to do that. Didn’t have to do that. I gave him a tap, and thank him again later tonight. Goes a long way when someone not a fighter stands up for you,” Barkey said last night in his postgame presser.

Many are calling for more of the pairing together, with comments like “Love Matvei Michkov with Denver Barkey” and suggestions they need a solid center to unlock even more potential. This duo (along with their line work with Sean Couturier) was arguably the Flyers’ best unit that night. It also ties back to earlier moments, like Michkov teaching Barkey how to pull off a Michigan goal during practice — pure fun between the prospects turned NHL youngsters. These two are key parts of the Flyers’ future, and their growing connection is one of the most exciting storylines right now.
